Since my last update in November, I have traveled back to the US, planned a wedding, GOT MARRIED, gone on a honeymoon, and am now back in the DR with our ministries in full swing.<br />
Last year was one of the busiest and greatest years I've had, all in one. From living at home for a couple months, to Guatemala, to the Dominican, to getting engaged, to planning a wedding, then to finally getting married with only 1 day to spare left in the year. God has blessed me so faithfully in all the excitement and blessings he gave me 2011. I couldn't be a happier newlywed wife, daughter, mentor, and person all around. As this year is into full swing I wanted to put into writing some of my new year's resolutions for my life and ministry here in the DR. Hopefully having these down in writing will give me an entirely new group of people keeping me accountable for these things and in addition, share with you what is on my heart for this year.<br />
<br />
1. I want to continue in my daily Bible study with my husband to prayerfully bring both of us closer to Him.<br />
<br />
2. Each of my disciples have the desire to learn English and learn about the Bible so I would like to help them learn a new story each week and different English vocabulary words from the story.<br />
<br />
3. I want to be a better communicator to my family, friends, churches, and everyone back in the States.<br />
<br />
<br />
4. I would like to spend more time doing activities with my 3 disciples outside of school.<br />
<br />
<br />
My hope is that anyone who reads this will help me stay accountable for these things. If you are reading this, you must take an interest in what I am doing here and I cannot thank you enough. It means the world to me to have the support back home that I do. As time passes here, I will continue to keep you all updated on all that is going on here in the DR. My husband also has a blog and he, being an English major, is much more of a talented writer than I. <div class="MsoNormal">Even though the seasons here don’t often find a way to change, it only felt natural to celebrate the beloved holiday of Halloween here in the Dominican. Fall has always been one of my favorite times of year, mainly due to my love of my family’s Thanksgiving celebration. Being such, we brought decided to bring the season to us. These kids love to have a good time with music and friends, as do all teenagers, so we planned a Halloween party in the Outreach center in Rio San Juan. The day of, my girls were so thrilled and excited for the fiesta later that evening. They even begged to come early and help with decorations. We spent our discipling time that day decorating goody bags with pumpkins, ghosts, and any other scary goofy things we could think of. I was so proud of one of my girls, Estefany, especially as we planned for the party. During this process I was able to see how much she truly wanted to use this opportunity to help and serve others. Through decorating all the bags for the kids, hanging up streamers, and blowing up balloons, for maybe the first time, I saw her put a great amount of effort into something for other people. This was so encouraging to me, and now that I think of it, I need to tell her this and how proud I am of her.</div><div class="MsoNormal">So many others showed up at 5, an hour early, and hung up streamers that said ‘Sangre!’ or ‘Blood!’, they blew up many balloons and punching balloons (you can imagine the excitement once they figured out how to use those!), they set out plates, and many other things to help us. The decorating <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>was maybe just as fun as the party itself, watching all the kids scurry around the room in complete chaos to set up for the perfect Halloween party! </div><div class="MsoNormal">We had sodas, cookies, and even a real jack-o-lantern that Jordan and I carved the night before! As all the kids started to arrive they became instantly moved by the blaring music of Michael Jackson in the room. These kids LOVE Michael Jackson and have a dance to probably every one of his songs. One of my favorite parts of the evening is when the song Thriller came on. Suddenly, as the song started and began picking up speed, 7-8 of the kids lined up in a row and started doing the Thriller dance. Thankfully I was able to record it on video. One of my disciples Graisy let down all of her hair then put it in front of her face and started walking around the room like a mummy. On the other side of the room we had a line, probably 15 people deep to bob for apples. In another corner we had water bottles with glow sticks in them set up for bowling. Then to top it off the other 30 kids were painting each other’s faces and every balloon they could find. Complete chaos could probably not fully describe this experience. As crazy, and messy, and overheated it was in the space, it was such a neat time we were able to share with the kids. They felt comfortable around us, sincerely wanted to bring their friends, and tell others about what we are doing. I pray for more experiences like this one, where the kids can come and truly be themselves and know they have a home in the outreach center. </div><div class="MsoNormal">This Halloween was special to me because I was able to see how my kids want to serve one another and just how comfortable the feel around us. I can't believe it has taken me so long. Many things have happened since I last updated. Everything with Manna Christian School has been going really well! The first 8 weeks we had English immersion and I taught English for 2 hours each day. Now that English immersion has ended, I teach Monday and Wednesday afternoons and continue to do my discipling time each day with my 3 girls. As there are probably countless things I could blog about, instead of trying to cover them all, I wanted to hit a highlight or two.<br />

About a month ago, I had the opportunity to spend the night at Jailinne's house, one of my disciples. We had such a fun night and next day activities planned. After Club Chiquito on Friday Jailinne, Graisy, Estefany, and I went over to Jailinne's house to get ready for the fun evening ahead! Going back to my teenage days we tried on probably at least 5 different outfits until we all found just the right one. Then we went out for pizza and to watch the basketball game in town. It was interesting being with them in their own environment. Normally, they know me as 'teacher Audrey' or 'discipler Audrey' but it was nice to have this time were we could just be friends and enjoy our time together. Before the game started, we went to the park right next to the court and took probably 100 pictures with all kinds of different poses. They LOVE having their picture taken and looking at each and everyone after. We had a lot of fun and I'm sure entertained anyone and everyone who walked by. Then we watched the basketball game and headed back home later that evening. Jailinne, Graisy, and I had a real sleepover where we all crammed into a bed much too small for the three of us, and watched The Princess and the Frog. The next day we woke up and headed over to Milagros' house (Graisy's mother) and spent the morning with her. I was able to go watch her get her hair rolled and just spend some time talking to her. Then Graisy cooked us her famous Dominican spaghetti, which was our first lunch of the day. Then we walked back to Jailinne's house where her father had also cooked us a lunch consisting of beef and all kinds of different vegetables. I was beyond stuffed by this point, but I thought it was really sweet that they both wanted to feed us.<br />

After lunch we went to The Beach of the Dead (there is a graveyard there) and looked for grapes. We were actually able to find some and they were pretty tasty! We enjoyed some time just swimming in the ocean and spending time together. You could imagine by this point I was pretty checked out of Spanish after trying to translate in my head over the previous 12 hours, but nonetheless, I tried to keep up. Then we went swimming in the laguna and I continued to take pictures as they jumped into the water. Not soon after, I headed back to the outreach center and Evan picked me up. Even though I was completely exhausted after not a good nights sleep and trying to speak and understand Spanish over the previous 24 hours, I was really blessed to be with the girls in their own environment. It was complete immersion! They were really sweet trying to take care of me and make sure I was as comfortable as possible. They are good girls and I love them a lot! Here are some pictures...<br />

<div class="MsoNormal">It’s nothing but excitement here in the DR as we are all in the final preparations for our school starting next Monday and carrying out all of the activities in Rio San Juan. With the transition out of groups Jordan and I have still had quite the showing of children and teens in our ministries. Monday nights have been our Princesas and Pescadores time. These are kids ranging from ages 10-17. Our kids love to have fun. Our desire for this time was to create a kind of environment, but also with something more. Our official kickoff ‘meeting’ with them went really well. We all had banana splits with every random topic you could think of. We also played some games and really enjoyed the fellowship and company of another. The next week we presented them with a paper stating the expectations we were holding them accountable to and how the attendance system was going to work. The expectations basically states that we are holding them to the standards the Jesus left for us, commanding us to love the Lord first and foremost, then to love others as ourselves. This paper also stated specific ways they could live out both of those commandments. The reason why I felt the need to go into such detail on these items is because I want our kids to see these 2 commandments as reachable goals. We want them to be able to really practice loving the Lord first and loving others second. These specific expectations and guidelines for our program also show them that we are trying to hold them to a higher standard. Jordan and I want them to feel ownership over this program and really participate in the things we do together. I would say they took all of this information very well. They were very excited to see all the fun things we had planned for the rest of the year.</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">Monday we started our P&P time by hanging out, then playing a dangerously competitive game of Steal the Bacon. We had the whole group split up, with 10 kids on each side, and race to the middle to try and steal the bandanna and get it back to their side. It was fun watching them get so into it, however the losing team took their loss pretty tough. After the game we had announcements then Jordan took the boys for their lesson and I had the girls. As we are trying to keep our Club Chiquito lessons and P&P lessons in sync, we both spoke out the story of Adam and Eve. With the girls we each got a Bible and read Genesis 3. Each girl would go around and take 2 verses. Then we talked about Eve’s temptation to eat the apple that God had forbidden her to eat. I had the girls get a marker and a piece of paper and write down 3 temptations they had. They did really well following instructions. I was really blessed to have my fellow teammates/ great friends (Jill and Rachel) there with me to help me keep them focused and calm down. The girls went around and shared their temptations and each one listened to the other. Then I told them we were going to spend 30 in silence to talk to God about our temptations. Keeping these children quite is a much greater feat than you would believe, but they did exactly what I had asked. There was completely silence as they all spoke to God in that moment. I felt so proud to be sitting there with them and just asked the Lord to please hear their prayers. </div><div style="text-align: center;">Before all the interns left we were able to have all our kids come out to camp to spend the night with us. You can imagine 20 teenagers out here with us, having practically free reign of the camp, was not one of our calmer nights. When they all arrived we ate homemade pizza and drank flavored sodas. You’d be very surprised how much these kids can eat. Even my girls, as seemingly skinny as some of them are, put away at least four pieces of pizza. They loved it though. Then we spent the rest of the night running around camp, playing games, roasting marshmallows over the bonfire, watching all the Dominicans dance to their hearts desire, then playing a movie up on the pad. </div><div style="text-align: center;">A large part of mine and Jordan’s ministry out here is our Princesas and Pescadores. We wanted to start the semester off right by throwing a big welcome party for all of our kids. We decided to have ice cream sundaes with all the toppings. These included fruit loops, crusted up Oreos, bananas, peanuts, cherries, whipped cream, and many other delicacies. We had the whole place decorated with streamers and balloons as well. As the kids started to arrive, many of them danced and hung-out. We all ate our banana splits then Jordan and I introduced to them our game. We had thought this game up probably a day before and knew the kids would get a kick out of it. Basically we had 10 bowls set up at the end of the room with a different food item in them. There were two teams so each team had five bowls. One bowl contained pickles and jalapenos, another was nasty baby food, another whip cream and Oreos, another had a melted Twix bar, and the last was a mixture of pb & j. We covered each the bowls so none of the kids saw them before hand. Then they would pick a partner and one person had to walk on their hands while another held their ankles and finish one of the bowls. It was a race between the two teams and the team to finish their bowls first got to pie Jordan and me in the face. It was really hysterical. I felt somewhat guilty for filling a bowl with jalapenos but the kids seemed to love the game, some more than others of course. We had a great time and it was just the way to get our semester kicked off.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

</div><div style="text-align: center;">I was really blessed to be able to spend an entire week with my mother here! She came just after the summer groups and the interns left, so we were able to have a lot of great, quality time together. We went to Santiago with the team, visiting Chiles, Jumbo mall, Pricesmart, saw the final Harry Potter movie, and visited many other luxuries of the big city. She really enjoyed seeing that aspect of the country. The next day we went to my good friend Milagros’ house. Her name means miracle in English and she is truly a sweet woman. Her daughter, Graisy, is one of the girls I mentor and spend a majority of my time with. We arrived at her house in the morning, helped her cook and spent time with the girls. Jailinne taught mom how to make a thread bracelet by tie lots of knots with different pretty colors of string. Graisy painted mom’s toe nails and we all shared a wonderful meal. Milagros’ is truly one of the most faithful women I’ve ever met. She speaks constantly of the love she has for the Lord and continually strives to please him. I love speaking with her about these things. Her passion for her faith and her family really radiates in all that she says and does. This day was a blessing to both my mother and me. August 13 was mine and Jordan’s one year anniversary and he asked me to marry him! We woke up very early to go see the sunrise on the beach and it was nothing short of perfect. I had no idea he was going to propose, even though my parents had known for months. He played me a really special song and asked me to spend my life with him. It was one of the most exciting moments of my life, knowing I’m going to marry my best friend and guy of my dreams. We spent the entire day on the beach, got a massage, and started the ever exciting wedding plans. That night all of the team and mom came out to have dinner with us on the beach. It was truly a day I will never forget. God has blessed me profusely with a life more perfect and special than I could have ever imagined. We have kept very busy between our groups and Dominican disciples here. Last week my girls (that you met in the last blog post) were able to come with us to Puerto Plata day. For those of you who do not know, Puerto Plata day is a day that we travel into the big city and visit the people in the hospital and in the dump. I was really looking forward to experiencing this day with the girls because I knew it would force them outside of their comfort zone. After having had this day with them before I had a pretty good idea of how to best engage them. In each of the hospital rooms there are close to 10 beds per room. We normally spend about 10 minutes passing out bags, talking, and praying with people. Then we will sing some songs and have a prayer over the room. The girls were great about going up to people. I loved just to stand beside them at times and watch them go. It really made me proud how they made an effort to get to know these people. There was one lady in a wheelchair, very old and feeble, and they all three went up to her and laid their hands on her and started asking her questions. It was a great reminder to me to step back and let them take the lead. Another thing that really impressed me was that morning I found out that Jailinnee had prepared a prayer in advance to pray over the rooms. This can be a really scary thing for a 14 year old girl, to pray out loud in front of 20-25 people. She did so wonderful though and I know that her prayer encouraged Graisy and Estefanie to pray in front of others as well.<br />
<br />
Another exciting adventure me and the girls were able to have was a sleepover! They had been asking me about this for a couple of weeks and I knew it was something they would enjoy. So Wednesday night after community day, they all came back to camp with us and the festivities began. We enjoyed dinner, volleyball, and lots of other things. Rachel allowed us to use all of her paint and the girls painted canvases for their moms. I thought that was sweet because they came up with the idea. So we did that for awhile then they all played capture the flag. It is incredible to me the energy level these kids can maintain here. I am still trying to keep up. They must have run around for 2 hours chasing one another. It was very enjoyable to watch. Then once we were ready for bed, gracious Jordan allowed us to use his home (mine had no power at the time) and we all headed to bed. After a movie and nonstop giggling they fell asleep around 2 am. The next morning we woke up bright and early, cleaned up and went to breakfast. When we were sitting at breakfast the group went into quiet time. I had not planned to do anything specific with the girls during this time but I felt the urge to pull them aside for a little more serious of a time. After bringing our chairs into the grassy field, somewhat more isolated from the group, they really began to open up. <br />
<br />
I started by asking them things they struggled with and asked them what they had been praying about. It was amazing to hear their answers. The thing that surprised me most about their prayers and answers to these questions is that none of them revolved around themselves. They continually mentioned their families, people they cared about, someone that they knew was struggling. So often my prayers are for myself, my work, my struggles, and all things Audrey related. I realized that they have so much to teach me and others. These girls have so much potential and I have no doubt that the Lord is leading them down a promising path. After much talking, which these girls LOVE to do, we had a prayer. You really know a person on a deeper level when you hear them talk to God and that it what it was like for me. I felt very blessed for our time together that morning, as well as the experience in all.<br />
<br />
God is doing great things here. Know I love each of you and think about you often. Keep me, my girls, our team, and my Pappaw in your prayers.<br />

I feel so called to these people, but especially to spend time with 4 specific girls. Their names are Estefany, Jailinnee, Graisy and Rosemary. As many of you know we are starting a school in the first of September as an opportunity to pour into the lives of the children we are looking to disciple. We are using the school as not only an opportunity to educate them but more importantly to have the vast amount of time with them each day. Reflecting on how Jesus raised up his disciples, it is evident that He poured into them constantly. He was constantly surrounded by them. This is simple what we want to mimic with our kids. Estefany is the girl I have known the longest and the one I have clicked with since I first arrived 2 summers ago. I think the best word, or way, to describe her would be firecracker. She is FULL of energy and always engaging with someone. She is a heart, I believe, is starving for love and attention. She normally lives in Rio San Juan with her grandmother. Her house is very small compared to most, which is why, when in RSJ, she is normally out around town. My heart for Estefany is that she can grow maturity wise and learn to function on a deeper level. She is very fun to be around and loves the attention of others. However, I long for her to grow in a way that she can pray with me, or that we could have a deeper conversation. I know she is capable and I cannot wait to see how the Lord grows her in this way.<br />
<br />
Jailinnee is truly a doll. One of the things I admire about her most is just her willingness to sit down and devote time to people. When she and I sit down, she will give me and our conversation her full and undivided attention. I admire this so much about her because I think it reflects a level of maturity that many of us are still trying to reach. She has expressed to me that she dreams of traveling the world. She wants to work as a flight attendant and speak 5 different languages so that she can communicate with all kinds of different people. I have such high hopes for Jailinnee because I know that the Lord has put her in our path for a reason. My prayer for her is that she can discover what Christ means to her. She does not have the parental direction and attention that many of us have grown up with; therefore, I believe she has a beautiful sense of independence about her. I can’t wait to see her talents continue to be developed and used for the Kingdom.<br />
<br />
Graisy is one of a kind as well. She comes from a home with an incredibly connected mother named Milagros, which means miracle. Milagros was recently baptized as has a level of faith I personally aspire to. Although things at home have not always been smooth for Graisy and her little sister Adrianna, Graisy is a leader. She is the type of person that can truly influence others and they listen to her. I know she has been just the encouragement her mother has needed on many occasions. She also really reaches out to her younger sister, Adrianna (10 years old), who spends time with us as well. Graisy also has an amazing servant’s heart. Anytime Graisy is around I always see her painting someone’s fingernails or toenails with such precision as if they were her own. One day she painted so many she told me her shoulder was hurting. Graisy and Jailinnee are cousins and aspire to the same goal of traveling the world. My prayer for Graisy is that she can continue to develop her leadership qualities and to NEVER be afraid to step outside of her comfort zone. People notice her and follow her, and I cannot wait to be a part of her growth.<br />
<br />
Rosemary is just a sweetheart. She lives here in the children’s home and just loves to be around people. I met Rosemary 2 years ago when I first came and was drawn to her maturity and calm nature in any situation. Rosemary has a great desire to learn English and is very patient. As I have not been able to spend as much time with her as I have the other girls, thus far, I am thrilled for the opportunity to be a deeper part of her life. She is surrounded, here at the children’s home, by people who love her and want the best for her. My prayer for Rosemary is that she can discover the Christian woman that God has called her to be and to live that with confidence.<br />
<br />
I cannot repeat enough the potential I see in these 4 girls. God has placed them in our mission and before me specifically for a reason. I hope that this post has allowed you to have a more detailed understanding of these girls and my heart for them. God has incredible plans for this place and their lives specifically. Please continue to pray for me that I can have the energy to keep up with all of them and that my Spanish will continue to develop in a way that allows me to reach them. This is the mission I know the Lord has set in motion for my life and theirs and I’m thrilled for this journey.<br />

It is exciting and surreal at the same time to think I have no return ticket to the United States. I am here. I arrived in the Dominican on June 9th, my wonderful mothers 50th birthday, and am now in this whirlwind one would call mission work. When I first arrived I obviously got to see all my girls and all the kids and shared lots of hugs and kisses with them. It was also exciting to arrive to a room to call my own with a bed already in place. I spent my second day here just getting settled in. It was so nice to have a morning to just get settled in. I folded all my clothes, put up my shelves, got a little bedside table for my journals and pictures, and have desk for all my books. It really does look like my own little room. <br />
<br />
It is hard for me to believe that I am officially on the mission field. I feel as though I have so many things I should be doing and praying for and at times just thinking about it all can be somewhat overwhelming. However, I am determined to take it one day at a time. I am so excited for what the future holds for my teenage girls in Rio San Juan. There are three specifically that I will be discipling and spending time with. Their names are Estefanie, Graisy, and Jailinne. I have been praying for them a lot lately and this morning in my quite time I was able to really spend some time talking to God about them. This summer, while groups are here, I want to spend my time really building our relationship. I am hoping for them to be leaders in the Princesas program (my small bible study group of girls from the city) when I set that ministry underway. <br />
<br />
With all the momentum and excitement I have right now in arriving to the DR, I want to make sure that I pace myself. I have always had the tendency to get in way over my head and I want to do this right. The Lord is doing such amazing things here right now. It is as if each of these kids were placed before us so purposefully and they all have such potential. Each team member and myself are so passionate about devoting ourselves to bettering their lives and their futures. It really is an incredible undertaking though. To be completely honest, I have felt overwhelmed with just the incredible task before me and whether or not I am capable of being what Christ needs me to be for them. I am trying to spend as much time talking to Christ about this as possible and I do feel confident that He can use me. I am so blessed to have this opportunity and it is truly where he has called me to be.<br />
<br />
Please pray for our team as we are pushing forward in our different areas of ministry. Please pray for me and my transition on to the mission field and my progression in how I am building this ministry with these girls. Pray for our students/disciples and that Christ’s seed will be planted so deep within them.<br />
God has some incredible plans for this place and these people and I am so blessed to be a small piece in that. <br />

I promise you we have been very busy. Since I last posted, Jill and I have had many adventures with lots of language learning thrown into the mix. Our first trip that we went on was to Lake Atitlan and Chichicastenango (or Chichi for short). We really enjoyed this trip because most of it allowed us to experience their culture in a very unique way. We were able to ride in a lancha (or speed boat) across the lake which took a good 40 minutes. It was neat to be completely surrounded by volcanoes in a little dinky boat. As sketchy as the boat was, it definitely added to the excitement. Then once we arrived in the new little pueblo, or town, we went to visit one of their Mayan gods. Honestly, it was pretty creepy. Basically they took us back down this alleyway into this dumpy room with a very loud band playing instruments above us. This god was basically a wooden carving about 3 feet tall, wearing about 50 different ties, with a cigar stuck in its mouth. And we had to pay 5 Quetzales just to see it. You won’t find any pictures of the god because that cost more money. So we walk in and all these men are sitting in the smoky room surrounding the god and a lady gets on the floor and starts praying for him. I did an ‘in and out’ kind of viewing because it was pretty odd. But nonetheless, I was able to see one of the Mayan gods. Then, I think my favorite part of the trip was dinner on Saturday night. We went to this family owned restaurant where the 3 daughters played the marimba. The marimba is basically a huge wooden xylophone, and very popular here in Guatemala. It was so fun watching them play because we could tell the girls really enjoyed it! The rest of the weekend was pretty enjoyable. We went to a market and bought some different things, nothing too incredibly riveting. Then this weekend we went to the beautiful Semuc Champey. The car ride was a little too much being 10 hours each way, but I’d say the experience was quite worth it. <br />

1. We slept in a tiki hut!<br />
2. We hiked up to a view point to see the beautiful turquoise pools.<br />
3. We swam in the pools and slid down from one to another on little slippery mud-like slides.<br />
4. We tubed down the river.<br />
5. We swam through a dark cave while holding candles, our only light! There are no pictures of this because I was afraid my camera wouldn’t make it, but it was incredible! The cave was pitch dark and some parts we couldn’t even touch the bottom, we were just treading water and trying to hold the candle up. We were in that thing about 2 hours. How nice it was to see daylight after the fact.<br />
6. We met a very eclectic group of people who kept us constantly entertained. <br />
It was a great weekend.<br />

Then two weekends ago, Jill and I decided to stay here in Antigua. It was very relaxing and we found a really neat church to go to. It was most definitely planted here by people in the states, but it is called Iglesia del Camino, or Church of the Way (or path). Really, finding this church was an answered prayer. Since I have been in Guatemala, I have found it very difficult for some reason to sustain a healthy relationship with God. It is almost as though I had not been acknowledging him in my day to day. Before we visited this church, I did not even realize the distance I had created between me and Christ. When we arrived at the church and began singing, the words hit me like a ton of bricks. It was so refreshing to feel His presence again and rightfully acknowledge him. It completely caught me off guard how disconnected I had been when we started singing. I am so grateful for that day and have been trying so hard to sustain us since. I have realized very quickly that on days where I feel down or discouraged no one can revitalize me like Christ can. I’m not sure why I continually turn to other people or other things besides my relationship with Him, but I’m so thankful that He never gives up on me. <br />
Well that is what has been going on so far. We have about a week and a half left and I am desperately trying to retain and take in as much Spanish as possible. Please be praying that I can absorb all that I’m being taught. Please also be praying that the Lord will rightfully prepare me to arrive in the Dominican. I have really high expectations for my time out there and truly want to be the very best I can be for those people and children. I also want to know how I can pray for you. Well I couldn’t have imagined I’d be living in a valley surrounded by 3 volcanoes, where the sun rises at 5:30, and the streets are made of hundreds of little stones. The city is like nothing I have ever seen before. Granted, I have not done much world traveling outside of the States and the Dominican, but it is really neat to be living in a place that continually keeps me in awe. The people here are so incredibly nice. I think everyone that I’ve met has had the biggest smile on their face and would have sat down to talk to me for hours if I would let them! Jill and I have been staying very busy since arriving here. Of course we take classes for 5 hours each day (8 am-1 pm), so we spend much of our time at the school. I have been learning so much! It is incredible to me how much I THOUGHT I knew. Really, I’ve been saying worlds of things wrong and mispronouncing a plethora of words. It’s been really exciting to work with Willy, my teacher though. He always has so much energy and starts everyday by saying “Hello! It is a beautiful, wonderful day! How is my favorite student?” (But of course all in Spanish) He is very patient with me as well. Also, he loves to sing! He has been teaching me all these different songs in Spanish to sing with my kids in the DR and to help my pronunciation. I think we have sung a song together everyday thus far.<br />
After school, Jill and I have enjoyed touring and exploring this grand city of Antigua. The first day we were here we took a tour around the city and learned about the different banks, the market, found the McDonalds, and learned plenty other useful tidbits of information. Yesterday we went to the market which was amazing! It’s literally rows and rows of shops with all kinds of colorful handmade bags, purses, wallets, shirts, headbands, you name it, and they have made it! It was quite overwhelming considering how much I took a liking to all the colors and Guatemalan ethnicity of the handmade items! Thankfully I have Jill here to keep me grounded and steer me away from buying to my heart’s content! Then we went to the gym and got a membership for the month and worked out for an hour. We met a very sweet lady who worked there named, Veronica. We instantly connected :)<br />
<br />
Today we went to a Jade factory with the school! It was so neat! This boy named Edwardo works there and his family owns the little ‘factory’. He was so passionate and expressive as he was describing how the Jade was made. Jill and I got the biggest kick out of him. Basically his family looks for special kinds of rocks in mines and then makes them into jewelry. Some can take up to several months to handcraft. It was so neat to hear them talk about and show us what they were so passionate about and LOVED to do. Jill and I were also able to make some new friends from the school who went with us. We really enjoyed it.<br />
This weekend we are going to a neat lake that is surrounded by volcanoes. I forget the name, but will update you with pictures very soon. I have lots of pictures posted on Facebook, so you should go check them out.<br />

Keep us in your prayers as we are trying to ingest AS MUCH of this language as possible. It is exciting to think about where we could be in a couple of weeks, as fast as we are learning. God has been so good to me and really, everyday is better than the last.<br />

It's amazing to me that this day is already here. I already hear all of these people around me speaking Spanish and it's getting me even more excited to be there. Jill should get here in the next couple of hours then we will land in Guatemala around 8:20. Oh, and I was able to get an upgrade to 1st class! Soon I will be bathing myself in warm towelettes and eating toasted nuts. This rough life I lead.<br />

Looking back on the last couple of months, I am so grateful that I was able to spend some time at home before transitioning into this next phase of my life. It was so important for me to substitute teach and pay off this small school loan and get to spend all the time I did with my family. I am going to miss them terribly. Please keep my Pappaw in your prayers right now. This is my mom's father. He is having some health problems with his back and has an MRI tomorrow to see if it is fractured. <br />
<br />
I also have some really great news to share! Sunday my incredible church family at Lake Cities contributed over $6,200 to my mission! This was near the EXACT amount I needed to reach my goal of funding. I was $6,000 short for my first year, and God faithfully provided $200 more than that! I spoke in the adult class and the teen class, then they played a video in front of the church. It was a big day for me and I cannot be more grateful for the family of believers I come from at Lake Cities. If any of you are reading this right now, I hope you know how blessed I am by your generosity. The Lord is using you to answer a prayer I've been praying for years.<br />
<br />
It was also a huge encouragement to have my Mammaw, Pappaw, Aunt Net, Jordan, Mom, Dad, and Caullen there with me Sunday. These are some of my very favorite people and I felt so blessed to be surrounded by them on this day.<br />
<br />

All the kids were able to hunt Easter eggs in a circled off section of grass. I'm pretty sure they enjoyed the candy "free for all". There were different tables that sold different things. Our table, with Lake Cities, was nachos and candy. Props to Caullen and Zeke for walking all around the field with nachos in hand screaming about how great they were. Also all of the proceeds we raised went straight to me to help me on my mission trip! I was so blessed by all the members of the church who came out to support me. The Bells, Rhonda, Karen, and many others blessed me incredibly by making today happen.<br />

I'm getting closer and closer to my said fundraising goal! It's pretty exciting to see how the Lord is providing. <br />

However, if I came away from this trip with one thing, it was how particular the Lord's timing was for my trip. With my ticket bought to leave March 15th for the DR, I was more than ready to go. After a 5 am wake up and close to an hour long security check in through the air port, I had boarded the plane, turned off all electronics when the captain came over the speaker. It turns out there was a leak in the fuel compartment of the plane and we would not be able to leave. Unable to fly out in time to make my Miami flight to the DR, it was obvious that I would be waiting another day to leave. <br />

You know you are in a different country when the thickness of the air causes immediate hair frizzing accompanied by the overjoyed mariachi band. It felt like home.<br />
<br />
Thankfully I was able to spend so much time with Jill and the rest of the team there. It was exciting to be back and experience that place from a 'non intern' perspective. I felt an incredible sense of belonging and purpose. My girls in Rio San Juan were so welcoming and we must have hugged continually the entire two weeks I was there. One of the things I look forward to the most is the opportunity to speak with them on a deeper level. As of right now my Spanish just will not allow it. After my month in Guatemala at language school I hope to be able to really reach out to those girls on a deeper level. The Lord was so gracious in allowing me extra time out there as well. As I had planned to leave on Friday March 25th, I was able to push my ticket back to Saturday. Then on Saturday they cancelled my flight into Miami and I was able to have another extra day with my people! Flying out on Sunday was nothing but God's time. Sunday morning before we left for the airport I was able to visit one of the lady's who is very involved with our congregation in Rio San Juan. She has a beautiful heart of service and is raising a family under Christ's influence. However she is currently facing difficult times with her husband and son. The pain these relationships are causing her moved her to tears during our prayer time and it truly broke my heart. Please pray for Milagros and her family. Pray that they will be protected from satan. Pray that Milagros will have strength to turn to the Lord even though she feels deserted by her husband. Pray for her daughters, Gracie and Audriana. They are such angels. All in all, the extra morning I was able to be in the DR and spend with Milagros and her daughters blessed me beyond anything I could have thought to ask the Lord for. I'm very thankful.<br />

Well, four weeks from today I will be leaving the good ole United States of America for Guatemala with my best friend and sister Jill Rhodes. I'm incredibly thrilled for this journey and how the Lord is going to mold our hearts to become more like His. I'll be keeping you posted.<br />

I will spend four weeks at La Union language school in Antigua, Guatemala, then hopefully arrive in the Dominican mid June.<br /><br />Lake Cities Church of Christ in Trophy Club, Texas has agreed to be my home base supporting congregation and elder-ship for me in this mission. My family and I have attended Lake Cities for close to 5 years now.<br /><br />Through this fund-raising process, I am looking for people willing to offer one time and monthly donations. <span style="font-weight:bold;">Feel free to contribute via the DONATE button on the right. Honestly I haven't really felt the urgency or the desire to do so until now. Right now, God is just doing some amazing things and truly being the guiding light I've always searched for.<br /><br />As you may or may not know, at the end of this summer, I was officially invited to join the Manna Global Ministries team in the Dominican Republic. This is a desire the Lord laid on my heart since my first week of ever stepping foot into the country. I remember my first summer with Manna and how unknown every aspect seemed. Not only did I know not a soul out there, speak a lick of Spanish, or had ever traveled outside of the country, but mission work truly remained a 'foreign' concept. However, it was only a matter of days until I told my journal that this was the place I was meant to be and the work I believe I was created to pour into. I remember boldly praying the Lord would allow me to graduate early so I could join the team sooner (which will be an amazing answered prayer this Dec. 18th!) and having a strange jealousy of the missionaries as this was their day to day 'job'.<br />From that moment on, my love for the country, the people, the work, and the Lord's mission in Bobita/Rio San Juan only grew and matured. <br /><br />As this last semester in school has been, surprisingly, one of the most difficult challenges I have ever faced, I find peace in the Lord's guidance for my future. I have begun the, ever so intimidating, fundraising process, in which I daily strive to hand over to the Lord. <br /><br />So here I go. Unknown to me the obstacles that lie in tomorrow, next week, or next semester, but I trust in the Lord's faithfulness as I have no other option but to put ALL of my hope in Him. As Paul writes in Romans 15: 13, "May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit."<br /><br />Dear Heavenly Father,<br />I trust you. Remind me of your faithfulness and the presence of Your Spirit everyday so that I am not led astray. I know you will bless this fundraising process for me and send me to the Dominican if that is Your will. So much so I'm blogging about them. God is incredibly faithful and playing people to their strengths and placing them in their specific role here on the team.<br /><br />Corinthians 12: 18- 20 says <br />"But in fact God has arranged the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be. If they were all one part, where would the body be? As it is, there are many parts, but one body." The unity of the team our Father has established continues to fasinate me and deepen my faith in His promises.<br /><br />Our missionary team consists of Norm, Chad, Ronald & Rosi, Porfi & Carla, and Evan & Rachel.<br />Norm is our head honcho. He is the Program/Field Director here in Bobita and Rio San Juan. Norm is the overs all and works constantly to assist the missionary team, interns, and groups here over the summer. He is also one of the board members for Manna Global Ministries so he is in constant communication with them and working through the details from the top down. Norm also keeps me in line reminding me constantly to buy ice for the groups while we are in town and holding me accountable to keep the drink cooler stocked with flavored water :) I am very grateful for Norm and his amazing leadership abilities God has blessed him with.<br /><br />Chad is the co-leader with Norm. Chad works very closely with the Children's home and running the summer groups. Anyone that spends but 30 minutes with Chad can see for themself his gift from the Lord in interacting with the kids in Bobita, Rio San Juan, or anywhere. With the gift of language and sincere interest in developing below surface level relationships, he is very talented in spreading the love of Christ.<br /><br />Ronald and Rosi are our Rio San Juan evangelists. On any given day they could be found spending time getting to know the group or out in the streets and houses in Rio San Juan just spending time with the people. Ronald is a character, constantly cracking jokes or starting a fun song. As the preacher of our new church in Rio San Juan his profound faith continues to amaze me. Rosi has one of the kindest hearts of anyone I've ever met! Her laughter is contagious as well as her joy for the Lord.<br /><br />Porfi and Carla work with the childrens home and keep it running. This family represents the epitome of kindness the Bible talks about. I couldn't think of a better couple to pour love out onto the children in the childrens home and lead the house mothers in the way they do. Their gift of the language and knowledge of the Latin American culture are incredible assets to their ministry.<br /><br />Evan and Rachel run the children's ministry in Rio San Juan. They organize all the children's activities and each have a small girls group and guys bible study group they minister to once a week. Spending time around them you will never find a dull moment. They really love this place and these people and it shows. Love 'em.<br /><br />Interns!<br /><br />Me- 'drink dictator' I always make sure we have water, buy ice in Rio San Juan, stock the cooler with drinks to sell and such. As well as 'communication czar' were I update the Manna Dr fan page on facebook, take pictures, and make a slideshow for the groups on the last night.<br /><br />Jill- 'event empress' She coordinates everything the group will do all day long from informing them, telling them what to wear, how to act, what to expect. She has a big job but she never ceases to carry it out with such joy and passion for the Lord. Love her to death.<br /><br />Nikki- 'food furor' From getting all the meals together, to arranging food in our tiny freezers she is constantly at work. Nikki does a wonderful job staying organized and keeping us all feed and happy.<br /><br />Jordan- No title but he works with Nikki because food is such a big job. He keeps us all laughing whether he is shaking his hips or making some ridiculous joke, we like to keep him around.<br /><br />Carter- 'mechanical monarch' Carter makes sure we always have water in the tank to shower with or have for camp period. This is so much work because if we don't have sun and the solar panels can't pump water, we have absolutely no water at camp. He also continually checks over the Diahtsu to make sure it's good to go. He's amazing at what he does and I'm so proud of his paitence and perservance with this job.<br /><br />Glenn- 'lodging lord' Anything with the dorms, trash, toilets, laundry, he makes sure everything is up to par with the groups stay. We like to delegate work to him because this is a chill job :)<br /><br />If you have made it this far I'm impressed. Thanks for caring. This is still only touching the surface. I was able to share this place with my mom and Caullen this week, along with my youth group from Lake Cities and it was incredible. Many times I found myself overwhelmed by emotion in having some of the people I love most in the entire world all within 50 meters of me! It was really neat to see how the Lord moved their hearts this week and covered Lake Cities with His Spirit.<br /><br />I was really proud in the way my mother had no fear in trying to communicate with the people of this country. She had such a desire to connect with them, her love over flowed on to the hearts of the Dominican people. I was also impressed in the incredible growth of my brother. I see Christ working in him probably more than he realizes himself. I am proud he was able to have no fear in interacting with these people and furthermore continue to be himself.<br /><br />Not to my surprise at all Matt did an incredible job leading the youth. He is just one of those people you experience Christ through interacting with. I believe Christ used him profoundly this week. I am so proud to be apart of Lake Cities and really felt their energy. <br /><br />I am so excited about the potential of RSJ! Our main focus has been this city and establishing a church home here. As we have been able to reach many of the children through our VBS programs we long to use those relationships to introduce their families and more importantly their parents to Christ. East Hill was so well prepared and they really worked hard in every activity and work project during the week. I am not sure if I had already told ya'll but this summer I am the Drink Director and the Communication Director (or we like to call them the drink dictator and the communication czar)<br /><br />Basically in my drink director position I work each day with any and all drinks. We have a cooler of drinks like coke, gatorade, diet coke, sprite, flavored water, etc. that I try to sell to raise money for our Latino American missionaries. I feel really blessed to be in this position because of the purpose behind it. I can really see Christ overflowing out of Ronald and Rosi, and Porfi and Carla's hearts for this place and these people. Honestly I am really blessed to know these people. Talk about selfless servants! Ronald and Rosi are our Rio San Juan evangelists who are working on creating and developing relationships in RSJ and eventually planting a church there. With their very involved work in groups, the group members are able to get a very clear picture of the quality people Ronald and Rosi are. Which honestly makes my job, in selling cokes for their support, very easy. <br /><br />One moment that really touched me this week was when I was in the hospital in Puerto Plata and I saw this Haitian lady laying in her hospital bed very sick. I got down to sit on the floor and talk with her and got my bible out to read her my favorite scripture from James. As I began reading it she reached into her bag and pulled out her Haitian bible and read along with me in Creole. It was so amazing to see her following along with me as I read in Spanish and she read in Creolo, and to see her nodding her head back in forth in agreement. God was there in that moment. <br /><br />Another incredible moment in the hospital was when I saw this lady laying in her bed in a diaper very very sick. Her two beautiful daughters were sitting and standing all around her bed looking so dismal about their mothers condition. It was just so touching to me to see such the role reversal. As the mother, the caretaker, and consoler was laying helplessly in her bed, her sweet daughters were all she had to keep her going. As I began talking with one of the daughters tears just started pouring down her face. I grabbed their hands and began to say a prayer and she endless squeezed my hand. I was so blessed even to be in their presence. God was definitely in that moment as well.<br /><br />I am obsessed with these people here! I think me and the other interns are in constant laughter over something. Our most recent bonding moments have been filled with singing melodies of Church of Christ hymnals and seeing how many people we can fit into the cab of the diahtsu. Yesterday we got 8! God has really blessed our bonds with a spirit of joy and overflowing fellowship in His name.<br /><br />I could go on and update for days but other people need the computer haha.<br /><br />Please pray for the upcoming groups and that the Lord will stretch us beyond our comfortable boundaries.<br /><br />Dear God I'm overwhelmed with your presence in this place. It has pretty much been non stop since our plane landed! I'll have to say I had no idea how I would react reuniting with the faces I had thought of each day since I had been away. It was so great to see everyone again. I'm pretty sure my knees and hands were shaking with excitement! It really feels as though I never left. <br /><br />Pretty much the last couple of days us interns have been working with Norm and Chad to prep just about every last detail for the summer. I think yesterday we went over our jobs and schedules from 9 in the morning until about 6 at night! (with food in between of course :) It was definitely a blessing to have all of our roles defined and get a very detailed picture on how we can best serve the groups and show Christ's love through the work here.<br /><br />I have a feel the Lord is going to do some pretty big stuff this summer. I have been praying that He will turn my world upside down. That He will challenge me, strip me of my comfort zone, break my heart, and help me to serve with joy. I have also been praying for the fellow interns and missionaries here. Let me just say these are some incredible people. It's amazing how the Lord has distributed such distinct and complimenting gifts to each member on our team. It is very clear that HE is the center of the work here.<br /><br />Our main goal this summer, slightly different than last year, is to really speak of Christ into the lives of the people in Rio San Juan. Working toward establishing a potential church home in RSJ, we want to begin planting seeds and creating intimate relationships with these people. As I have been seeking the Lord and a deeper relationship with him, I have come to realize just how little faith I have. I remember driving home from Colorado after the summer and literally looking out the window, staring with all the intensity I could at the mountain, thinking Lord move that mountain, and I wasn't even joking, but since I knew it wouldn't happen, surprise, it didn't move. </span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:verdana;"><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:verdana;">So if you believe what the Bible says to be true, then if one of us has the faith of a mustard seed (which I looked up, and it is the smallest seed, 3mm in diameter) then we could move a mountain. So since none of us have moved a mountain before, I assume our faith is way smaller than a mustard seed. Geez. Thats pretty small. But then again, I guess we are pretty small.<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; "> Faith is also being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see (Heb 11:1). Being in 2 <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_0">wintermesters</span> over the holidays has really allowed me to have a great appreciation for the time I was able to spend out there this summer. I don't really know if anyone reads this but if you do, and you are right now obviously, I wanted to share a fun story with you from this summer. My pictures from this summer are something very dear to me, because at any moment when I feel overwhelmed by the pressure of school or something else, I can go back to those moments and remember how happy my heart was in that moment. As I am currently overwhelmed and trying to finish this winter math class, I found myself looking through those old pictures and remembered the ridiculous story behind one in particular.</div><div><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre"> </span>It was the last week of the summer when just the interns decided we wanted to hike El <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_1">Morito</span>, a mountain (or what felt like one) close to <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_2">Bobita</span>. The hike up wasn't bad, I was pretty winded but we made it, however the hike back down was an adventure in itself. Coming up upon something we couldn't quite decipher between a foot deep mud pit or a foot deep cow patty pit it was trouble waiting to happen. As we approached it, I remember Hunter daring me to run across the sick pit of mud. As a dare wouldn't normally mean anything to me, many know, I am pretty open an accepting to any potentially dirty situations. Wearing my <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_3">Chaco</span> sandals I backed up and made a run for it through the sickness. To my surprise about halfway through the mud dash the mud patty pit ate my <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_4">Chaco</span> sucking it down into it's abyss. It was a dark moment when I discovered this meant either getting in the mud and digging for it or hiking back another 2 hours to the car without a shoe. So I went where probably no human in their right mind has gone before and started digging. And much to my surprise Hunter, Haley, and Chad all got down in the mud sticking their hands as deep as they would go trying to find it. I never felt so special as when 3 of my friends got down in that <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_5">poopy</span> mud to dig for my shoe. Nonetheless we spent about 30 minutes looking for it when this Dominican lady, known to be very different and eccentric, came up to us and insisted on helping us. So she gets down in the mud and sure enough finds the shoe on her FIRST try! I was laughing so hard I couldn't hardly believe my eyes. Sorry it has taken me so long to finally sit down here and write an update. Life here not only moves fast but each and every moment seems to be filled with purpose. It has been so nice the last couple of days to take a break and slow down. We have been able to have about a 4-5 day break period where we have gotten some much needed extra sleep and been able to take a trip to Jarbacoa to go white water rafting which was incredible.<br />I guess I never really doubted the fact that being out here this summer, working on the front lines in my Christian life that Satan was not going to use each and every thing he could to distract me from my mission out here. I feel as though the past couple weeks I have really been learning where those attack points are, how to recognize them, then how to present those in front of the Lord. What an amazing gift I have been given to give those to the Lord. I remember one morning a couple weeks ago just waking up with such a drained and tapped out spirit. I'm sure you can imagine when you dont daily lift your burdens up to the Lord and give those to Him the will gradually but surely build up to a point to where we as human beings cannot "sweep them under the rug" or deal with them any longer. I was so blessed in this hard morning that the Lord gave me such peace in finding the perfect scripture to soothe my spirit. So many moments like this one He has directed me and further steered me back into the correct direction when I have really and whole-heartedly given my burden or distraction to Him in prayer. I guess it is no surprise that being out here, as well in my request to Him for growth, that He has really pin-pointed out to me my weak points and how to deal with them so that I can use the perserverance as an opportunity to grow. I hope that makes sense. It does to me :)<br />Nontheless I, again, am so blessed that I have been given this place. The day I have to leave will probably be the hardest yet because of the relationships and equal lifestyle I have found corresponding with my own.<br />I just today finished a book called the "Screwtape Letters" which was very different but really had some valueable points. One thing I really feel like the Lord spoke to me through this book was the importance of the Present. The Present moment is the moment in which one really and truely experiences how to effect and change eternity. Worrying about the past which is stale and stuck in time does one no good, and dwelling on what the Future may hold only takes away from the Present. I do the book and the point I am trying to convey no just in what I just said but I guess what really stuck out to me was the true importance of every moment we are given. With each and every Present moment so fletting I've really begun to see the importance in not worrying about my Future, which I so instictively do, and really utilizing the Present moment to shape who I want to be and how I want to effect others. What a blessing to know that whenever you divert from the right path you have the very next present moment as a gift to redirect yourself and a new start. I really think that the Lord gives us such grace with the gift of time. For me, my personal goals for the rest of my time out here are to continue establishing lasting relationships with the local people and really going out of my way to spend time with them and serve them. Also to lift my daily distractions up to the Lord and to focus on the present moment I have been given. To recognize where I need improvement and thank Him for opening my eyes to that. And lastly just that with the next 3 weeks I am here I will leave all that is in me with this place and these people, so that when I leave I will know not one more ounce of effort or energy could have been put into the work we are trying to accomplish out here. Those are my current goals. Please continue to be in prayer for me and our work out here, but also that the Lord will show you what areas in your own life you can strengthen. I am sad to say that I had a whole blog typed up last week but suddenly lost the internet and lost the whole thing so that is why it has taken me so long! The group came in very early this week so I apologize in advance for how short this post will probably be. The past couple have weeks have been incredible. It is amazing to me how the Lord can work in such a short time span. With my dad and Nathan visiting I received the boost I needed to finish the summer. It truly is hard for me to believe that after this group I will be half way through the summer. Within this realization I have been able to reflect and look at in my life and time here in the Dominican what I still want to accomplish in my mission out here. On of the areas I want to expand and grown in is establishing deeper and more profound relationships within the community after prayer for this last night it is incredible how fast the Lord worked in response to my prayer. Today I was able to sit with Carmen, our cook, in the kitchen and talk to her about her family and her mother who is sick right now. And although talking and holding a conversation may come by easy to most, when in spanish it takes much more time. Well as I'm typing this I just got called to devo. I'm so sorry that I have not had the time to pour my heart out on here lately but know that I am pouring my heart out into this work and these people. I will update you as soon as possible.
